Barclays Plc has appointed Paul Johnson, formerly with Goldman Sachs Group Inc., as its new head of equities for the Asia-Pacific region, as part of a three-year strategy to strengthen its equities operations in the area. Johnson, who has been based in Hong Kong with Goldman since 2015, will oversee platforms, products, and client engagement across the region, according to an internal memo confirmed by a Hong Kong-based Barclays spokeswoman.

His responsibilities will include expanding the bank's capabilities in derivatives, equity-linked financing, electronic trading, and prime brokerage services. This appointment aligns with Barclays’ global initiative to enhance its equities business, which includes increased investment in high-margin areas such as prime brokerage and equity derivatives, announced earlier this year.

Johnson will collaborate with Christian Treuer, head of equities distribution for the Asia-Pacific region since July. Based in Hong Kong, Johnson will report to Scott McDavid on a global level and Jaideep Khanna, head of Asia-Pacific, regionally. He will also be part of the global equities management committee and the Asia-Pacific markets management team.

Before joining Barclays, Johnson served as co-head of equity derivatives and head of exotics equity derivatives trading at Goldman Sachs in Hong Kong. Earlier in his career, he was head of Central & Eastern Europe, Middle East, Africa, and Latin America forex options trading at Bank of America in London, as stated in the memo.
