U.S. equity markets showed a mixed performance in the first trading session following the Christmas holiday. The S&P 500 ended the day slightly lower, reflecting modest market activity.

Labor Department data revealed a dip in initial jobless claims for the week ending December 21, indicating continued strength in the labor market. This resilience could weigh on the Federal Reserve's decision-making regarding potential interest rate cuts in 2025.

Retail stocks saw notable movements, with Target (TGT) climbing 3% after announcing price reductions and promotional offers to sustain holiday sales momentum. The retailer's latest earnings report projected flat year-over-year comparable sales for the fourth quarter.

Fair Isaac Corp. (FICO), known for its credit scoring services, experienced a 2% decline, making it the worst-performing S&P 500 stock of the day. JPMorgan analysts recently gave the stock a "neutral" rating, citing concerns that higher prices might slow growth.

Tesla (TSLA) shares dipped 1.8%, reversing some pre-Christmas gains. While the electric vehicle maker is expected to announce record-breaking fourth-quarter deliveries, investors are increasingly focused on its autonomous driving and AI potential.

Super Micro Computer (SMCI) lost 1.7%, paring back some Christmas Eve gains. Pressure from its removal from the Nasdaq 100 Index and delayed filing concerns impacted the stock, but an extended deadline for submitting its annual report has eased delisting fears.

Walgreens Boots Alliance (WBA) led the S&P 500, jumping 5.3%. The pharmacy chain's shares have fluctuated since reports of potential buyout talks with a private equity firm surfaced earlier in December.

Discount retailer Dollar Tree (DLTR) rose 3.8%. Despite earlier losses tied to economic uncertainty and consumer spending pressures, the company announced that CEO Michael Creedon would remain in his role permanently, driving its turnaround strategy amidst growing competition.
